Villa Serbelloni
Bellagio has been a favoured summer resort since Roman times, when Pliny the
Younger holidayed on the promontory where Villa Serbelloni ( 031 95 15 55; Via
Garibaldi 8; adult/reduced €8.50/4.50; tours 11.30am & 3.30pm Tue-Sun Apr-Oct) now stands.
The Romans introduced the olive and laurel trees that dot the vast 20-hectare gar-
dens, which took on their Italianate, English and Mediterranean designs at the be-
ginning of the 19th century. The villa, now privately owned by the Rockefeller
Foundation, still hosts scholars and academics, although the gardens, with their
unique view of lake's three branches, are open for guided tours.
