Getting There
Metro Brera is bounded by four metro stops. The best for the Pinacoteca is Mon-
tenapoleone on MM3 (yellow line) and Lanza on MM2 (green line). For the shops and
restaurants to the north, use Moscova on line MM2 (green).
Tram No 1 gives good access to the shopping street Via Vetero.
The Sights in a Day
Get to Princi ( Click here ) before the 10am scrum and order a lavish
breakfast of mini cornetti filled with hazelnut chocolate and jewel-like
fruit tarts to eat alfresco in the piazza. Then take a leisurely stroll south to the Pin-
acoteca di Brera ( Click here ) for a morning browsing Napoleon's superbly cur-
ated collection of Old Masters. The artworks are displayed in schools of style, in
line with the original intention of the gallery, which was to complement courses at
the academy.
The number of treasures in the Pinacoteca can be overwhelming, so take a
break and join the dreadlocked students downstairs in the on-site cafe.
Alternatively, head down Via Pontaccio for a stand-up meal of cheese and salami
at the olive oil bar ChiĆ¹ ( Click here ) .
In the early evening stick your head into Basilica di San Simpliciano
( Click here ) , which often hosts classical music and choral ensembles.
Then, if you're dressed to impress, push on to the Bulgari ( Click here ) for the most
stylish aperitivo in town, overlooking the manicured private garden.
