In-Depth Information
I would think it a mistake to let a character portray its main characteristics in every action. Lady
Macbeth must have moments when she is not scheming dark deeds. That was the danger
with Toad … he could have always been manic, but the quiet rel ective moments are just as
telling. If you played a character with the same tone the whole time, the audience would soon
become very numb to him. The best balance is to i nd variations within a set of character-
dei ning parameters. This may sound obvious, but you would be surprised at how much one-
dimensional acting I have seen from animators.
My favourite cross-dressing amphibian, Mr Toad, as a washerwoman.
Stop motion is unique in that a puppet is generally manipulated by just one animator at a time.
For better or for worse, this must surely focus, personalise and concentrate a performance
where multiple people involved might dilute.
