In the end, I was enormously pleased with the structure of the i lm, although inevitably, the more
you become familiar with a subject, the more you discover. After i lming, I came across an account
of their i rst meeting, where Mr Gilbert showed his indif erence to music and musicians by saying
something along the lines of 'I know of but two pieces of music, Mr Sullivan. One is “God Save the
Queen”, and the other is not. It is a suitably pithy, beautifully structured comment, and I wished
I had been able to use it at the beginning of my i lm, as it would have set up the discord in the
relationship from the start. As it stands, Gilbert just seems tetchy. Oh, the joy of hindsight.
