Required BW version and service packs
SAP BW systems must be running at least SAP BW 7.00 or higher with at least service 19
(SP19) or higher. According to SAP Note 1813548, your target release after the DMO pro-
cess should be at least SAP BW 7.31 or higher, but we recommend a target release of SAP
BW 7.4 or higher. SAP BW 7.4 has numerous advantages over previous releases of BW,
including OpenODS views, new CompositeProviders, and Advanced DSOs, and BW 7.4 is
the first release of BW that has been optimized extensively to fully leverage the simplified
LSA++ architecture.
SAP BW 7.4 is designed for HANA!
A strong argument can be made against upgrading your BW to SAP
BW 7.4 if you are not implementing HANA in your business, since
most of the optimizations in BW 7.4 are focused on maximizing us-
age of the HANA calculation engine and the LSA++ architecture. If
you do not plan to implement HANA in your environment, SAP BW
7.31 is a perfectly acceptable alternative to BW 7.4.
