Figure 2.10: Sizing tool options
Pick the right tool!
The SAP BW on HANA automated sizing tool is the preferred tool
for calculating the correct hardware for the DMO migration. The t-
shirt method and the rule-of-thumb approach are only appropriate
for initial hardware estimates.
When the options for the sizing tool are open, the output file name should be changed to
something that is easy to remember. The sizing tool considers the existing database type
as well as other parameters, such as table types. It even considers the impact of non-active
data when performing calculations in order to provide the most accurate results. Several
options may be adjusted to allow the tool to return results that are as accurate as required in
the most efficient manner possible. For example, choosing to suppress tables of less than 1
MB will increase the speed of the calculations.
Long runtimes!
Remember that choosing the highest precision will cause the calcu-
lations to take much longer. For example, runtimes of 30-60
minutes, or even several hours, are not uncommon with a 10 TB
database and 12 parallel processors. In most cases, the low or medi-
um precision options are good enough.
