showed that the ionic products from akermanite promoted the proliferation
of hBMSC significantly more than did β-TCP extract. Alkaline phosphatase
(ALP) activity and the expression of osteogenic marker genes of BMSCs,
such as ALP, osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OCN), and bone sialoprotein
(BSP), were significantly enhanced by akermanite extract compared to β-TCP
extract, indicating the osteogenic stimulation for akermanite (see Figure 2.7)
(Huang et al. 2009). Besides the stimulatory effect on BMSCs, Ca, Mg, and Si
ions extracted from akermanite in the concentrations of 2.36, 1.11, and 1.03
mM could facilitate the osteogenic differentiation of adipose-derived stem

Bone-related gene expression of hBMSC was enhanced by akermanite extracts compared to
that by β-TCP extracts. (ALP: alkaline phosphatase; OCN: osteocalcin; OPN: osteopontin.)
