Navigating multiple artboards
Illustrator allows for multiple artboards within a single file. This is a great way to create a
multi-page document so that you can have collateral pieces, like a brochure, a postcard, and
a business card, in the same document. You can easily share content between designs, create
multi-page PDFs, and print multiple pages by creating more than one artboard. For more
information on artboards, check out the sidebar, titled “ Artboard overview , ” at the end of
this section.
Multiple artboards can be added when you initially create an Illustrator document, by
choosing File > New. You can also add or remove artboards after the document is created,
by using the Artboard tool in the Tools panel.
Next, you will learn how to efficiently navigate a document that contains multiple artboards.
1. Choose File > Open and, in the Lesson01 folder, select the L1start_2.ai file located in
the Lessons folder on your hard disk. Click Open to open the file.
2. Select the Selection tool ( ) in the Tools panel, if it is not already selected.
3. Choose View > Fit All In Window. Notice that there are two artboards in the
document.
The artboards in a document can be arranged in any order, orientation, or artboard size—they
can even overlap. Suppose that you want to create a four-page brochure. You can create
different artboards for every page of the brochure, all with the same size and orientation.
They can be arranged horizontally or vertically or in whatever way you like.
The L1start_2.ai document has two artboards which contain the designs for the front of a
postcard and a business flyer.
