shapes immediately, by default. Using the Effect menu lets you edit shapes
independently.
Clicking the underlined word “Add” allows you to change the Pathfinder effect and to
edit the more advanced features of the Add effect.
6. With the group still selected, choose View > Outline.
The two shapes are still there and completely editable, since the effect being applied is
live.
7. Choose View > Preview, and then choose File > Save.
Applying an effect to convert a shape
Using an effect, you can convert an existing shape to a rectangle, a rounded rectangle, or an
ellipse without having to redraw the shape. Next, you will convert a rectangle to a rounded
rectangle.
1. With the Selection tool ( ), double-click the red rectangle group, to enter Isolation
mode.
2. Click the red rectangle to select it.
3. Choose Effect > Convert To Shape > Rounded Rectangle. In the Shape Options dialog
box, make the following changes:
• Size: Relative (the default setting)
• Extra Width: 0
• Extra Height: 0
• Corner Radius: 20 pt
Select Preview to see the corners of the rectangle round. Click OK.
