If you click on the shaded area of the rectangle at the top of the
Gradient Fill
window (

),
it will open the
Gradient Editor
window (

) instead, and you can choose a gradient from
the swatches and also edit the
Gradient
characteristics.
The characteristics of the selected
Gradient
are displayed as a horizontal rectangle with a
number of icons above and below the rectangle. For our purposes, we are only concerned
about the icons below the rectangle.
The large icons below the bar are called
Color Stops
and the small diamond shaped icons
are
Color Midpoints
