5.5.5. Water Uses, Land Uses and Human Activities
Edko watershed is a part of the western delta region; it is an agricultural watershed, the main water use
being agricultural, in addition to municipal and industrial water uses. The amount of water used in the
cultivated area of the watershed is estimated to be 1793 km 2 (427000 feddans). The main land use in
the watershed is agriculture, with some land devoted to villages and small towns, some industrial
plants and fish ponds around the lake area. Also the land use reflects the main human activities in the
watershed, which are mainly agricultural activities, some industrial activities like oils and textiles
(factories exists in the upstream area of the catchment), and aquaculture and fishing activities inside
and around the lake area. In figure (5-12) we see a map that illustrates the different land uses in the
watershed.
