In-Depth Information
MAP
( 878-6058; www.mauiwine.com ; Kula Hwy; 10am-5pm, tours 10:30am & 1:30pm) En-
joy free tours and wine tastings in the historic stone cottage where King David Kalakaua
once slept. In the 1970s, while awaiting their first grape harvest, the owners decided to
take advantage of Maui's prickly fruit - today the biggest hit is the sweet Maui Splash, a
light blend of pineapple and passion fruit. Other pineapple novelties worth a taste: the
dry Maui Blanc and the sparkling Hula O'Maui.
This is no Napa Valley, however, and the grape wines are less of a splash. Reservations
are necessary for groups of 10 or more.
Don't miss the fascinating exhibit at the side of the tasting room that features
Kalakaua lore, ranch history and ecological goings-on. Opposite the winery, see the stack
remains of the Makee Sugar Mill , built in 1878.
Check the website for details about the ranch's quarterly Sunday Drive Event (March,
June, September, December) featuring live slack key guitar music, glassblowing demon-
strations and cowboy-centric food.

Bully's Burgers BURGERS $
MAP
( 878-3272; www.triplelranchmaui.com ; 15900 Piʻilani Hwy; burgers $9-12; 11am-7pm winter,
to 8pm summer) A hut plunked in the midst of cow skulls, Bully's has no gourmet preten-
sions - other than the blue cheese on the bacon-topped Black and Blue burger. The or-
ganic beef, fresh from the adjoining Triple L Ranch, is grilled while you wait and served
with a chatyote pickle. Try the spicy chipotle sauce. Bully's is in Kanaio, about 4 miles
beyond Tedeschi Vineyards. If you're coming from Hana, this is where you reward your-
self for surviving the drive.
ʻUlupalakua Ranch Store DELI $
MAP
( www.ulupalakuaranch.com ; burgers $9-11; grill 11am-2:30pm, store 9:30am-5pm) Sidle
up to the life-size wooden cowboys on the front porch and say howdy. Then pop inside
and check out the cowboy hats and souvenir T-shirts. If it's lunchtime, mosey over to the
grill and treat yourself to an organic ranch-raised elk burger. Can't beat that for local.
The store is 5.5 miles south of Keokea, opposite the winery.
