In-Depth Information

Mon-Sat) This evocative museum occupies the 1833 home of Christian missionary Ed-
ward Bailey. Bailey was the second missionary to occupy the house, and he lived in the
home nearly 50 years. The residence sits on the former compound of Chief Kahekili,
who ruled Maui from 1736 to 1795. On the ground floor, the Hawaiian section displays
spears, ancient fishing tools and shark-tooth daggers (ouch!). There's also a notable col-
lection of native wood bowls and stone adzes. Period furnishings and photos of the resid-
ent missionary families are displayed on the 2nd floor.
The link between ancient Hawaiian wave riders and modern-day surfers comes alive in
a low-key exhibit beside the museum parking lot. There you'll find the Duke's Surf-
board, a 10ft redwood surfboard that surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968)
rode. The Duke not only won Olympian gold in swimming for the US but more import-
antly he revived the ancient art of surfing. A full-blooded Hawaiian, he traveled the
world with his hefty surfboard in hand, introducing the sport to wannabe wave riders in
Australia, Europe and the US mainland. Today, he's considered the father of modern
surfing.
Kaʻahumanu Church CHURCH
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(103 S High St, cnr W Main & S High Sts) This handsome missionary church is named for
Queen Kaʻahumanu, who cast aside the old gods and allowed Christianity to flourish.
The clock in the steeple, brought around the Horn in the 19th century, still keeps accurate
time. Hymns ring out in Hawaiian at Sunday morning services, but at other times it's a
look-from-outside site, as the church is usually locked.
