Sights
A cluster of historical buildings anchor the small downtown. Many of them are still in
use today as government offices. Hawaii's best-known architect, Maui-born CW Dickey,
left his mark on downtown before moving on to fame in Honolulu. The
Wailuku Public
Thu)
, built c 1928, is a classic example of Dickey's distinctive Hawaii regional design.
Another Dickey creation, the
Territorial Building
, lies right across Aupuni St. Within a
short walk are four more buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
To discover all the gems in town, pick up a copy of the Wailuku Historic District walk-
ing map (free, but donations appreciated) at the Bailey House Museum. Also be aware
that parking enforcement officers are very strict about posted parking times downtown -
according to local lore, one officer ticketed his own mother's car!
