Whalers Village Museum MUSEUM

( 661-5992; www.whalersvillage.com/museum.html ; Level 3, Whalers Village, 2435 Kaʻanapali Pk-
wy; adult/child 6-18yr $3/1; 10am-6pm) Lahaina was a popular stop for whaling ships
traveling between Japan and the Arctic in the mid-1800s. This fascinating museum re-
veals the hardships and routines of the whaler's life. Authentic period photographs, ship
logs, harpoons, 19th-century scrimshaw and intriguing interpretive plaques sound the
depths of whaling history. Particularly eye-opening is the life-size forecastle. How 20
crewmen could live for weeks in this tiny room - without coming to blows or losing their
minds - is a mystery. Also impressive is the intricate rigging on the built-to-scale replica
of an 1850s-era whaling ship.
Interest piqued? Stick around for a humpback whale talk offered Thursday to Saturday
at 11am and 2pm. Also look for the full-size sperm whale skeleton at the front entrance
of the shopping center.
Kaʻanapali Beach Walk WALKING TRAIL
Smell the salt air, take in the opulent resort sights and check out the lively beach scene
along the mile-long walk between the Sheraton and Hyatt hotels. Both the Hyatt and the
Westin are worth a detour for their dazzling garden statuary and landscaping replete with
free-form pools and rushing waterfalls. The Hyatt's rambling lobbies are hung with heir-
loom Hawaiian quilts and meditative Buddhas. Don't miss the pampered black African
penguins who love to waddle around their four-star penguin cave.
At the southern end of the walk the graceful 17ft-high bronze sculpture The Acrobats ,
by Australian John Robinson, makes a dramatic silhouette at sunset. In the early evening,
you'll often be treated to entertainment from the beachside restaurants.
