The mission grounds also hold a 90ft pagoda and a whopping 3.5-ton temple bell,
which is rung 11 times each evening at 8pm. Inside the temple you can see priceless
Buddhist paintings by Haijin Iwasaki.

10am-4pm Mon-Wed) This small white cottage on the grounds of Lahainaluna High School
housed Hawaii's first printing press. Although its primary mission was making the bible
available to Hawaiians, the press also produced Hawaii's first newspaper in 1834. Named
Ka Lama (The Torch), it held the distinction of being the first newspaper west of the
Rockies. The adjacent school was founded in 1831, and students operated the press.
The original Rampage Press was so heavily used that it wore out in the 1850s, but sev-
eral items it printed are on display. There's also an exhibit explaining the history of
Hawaii's 12-letter alphabet and a reprint of an amusing ʻTemperance Map' ($5), drawn
by an early missionary to illustrate the perils of drunkenness.
It's wise to call in advance. Hale Paʻi is staffed by volunteers so opening hours can be
iffy. To get there, just follow Lahainaluna Rd two miles northeast from downtown La-
haina.
Activities
Lahaina is not known for its beaches, which are generally shallow and rocky. For swim-
ming and snorkeling, head up the coast to neighboring Kaʻanapali.
