In-Depth Information
To explore Maui thoroughly and reach off-the-beaten-path sights, you'll need your own
wheels. Public transportation, while improving, is still limited to the main towns and
tourist resorts.
The most comprehensive road atlas available is Ready Mapbook of Maui County,
which shows every road on the island; it's sold in bookstores.
TO/FROM THE AIRPORTS
With either of the following Kahului Airport transfer services you can make advance re-
servations for your arrival to speed things along. Speedi Shuttle has a desk and Executive
Shuttle has a courtesy phone in the baggage-claim area. Keep in mind you must reserve
in advance for your return to the airport - and don't wait till the last minute.
The Maui Visitors Bureau ( Click here ) runs a staffed Visitor Information Desk in the
baggage claim area that's open 8am to 9:30pm daily. There are racks of local travel bro-
chures beside the desk.
Speedi Shuttle ( 877-242-5777; www.speedishuttle.com ; reservations 7am-10pm) A big
Speedi plus is that they've converted to bio-diesel, using recycled vegetable oil to fuel
their vehicles, so if you take them you'll be traveling green-friendly. Fares for one person
from Kahului Airport cost $50 to Lahaina, $54 to Kaʻanapali, $74 to Kapalua, $33 to Ki-
hei and $39 to Wailea. Add $4 to $6 more per additional person.
Executive Shuttle ( 800-833-2303, 669-2300; www.mauishuttle.com ; reservations
7am-11pm) More conventional vehicles, but usually has lower rates. Like Speedi, the price
depends on the destination and the size of the group.
BUS
The Maui Bus ( 871-4838; www.mauicounty.gov ) offers the most extensive public bus
system of any Hawaiian island, except Oʻahu. But don't get too excited - the buses can
take you between the main towns, but they don't run to prime out-of-the-way places,
such as Haleakalā National Park or Hana. Buses come with front-load bike racks.
The main routes run once hourly, every day of the week.
Routes The handiest buses for visitors are the Lahaina Islander (Kahului-Lahaina), Ki-
hei Islander (Kahului-Wailea), Wailuku Loop (Kahului-Wailuku), Haiku Islander (Kahu-
lui-Paʻia), Kihei Villager (Maʻalaea-Kihei), Kaʻanapali Islander (Lahaina-Kaʻanapali)
and Napili Islander (Kaʻanapali-Napili) routes.
The Upcountry Islander and Haiku Islander routes stop at Kahului Airport.
