barren volcanic slopes looking out to sea. If you like that terrain, it is the only choice for
miles, and a good one. The freestanding guest wing is separated from the owner's resid-
ence by a large pool deck with Jacuzzi.
A vaulted ceiling, nice patio, kitchenette and refrigerated breakfast make this a com-
fortable if somewhat remote base. For larger parties, an adjoining room with private bath
can be rented for an additional $85. The B&B can be accessed either from Hwy 270 or
Hwy 250.

Hawi

Hawi (hah- vee ) can fit all of its businesses within two blocks, but it looms large in pic-
turesque charm, notable restaurants and great shopping finds. It was once a major planta-
tion town for the Kohala Sugar Company, and many local residents are descendants of
sugar workers. Mainland transplants are bringing big money to little Hawi and leading its
transformation from rustic boondocks to tourist destination. But the town offers only ba-
sic services, such as a post office, grocery store and gas station. Thank goodness, say the
residents.
