Hawaii Island Retreat BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$$

( 889-6336; www.hawaiiislandretreat.com ; At Ahu Pohaku Ho'omaluhia; r $425-500; )
This is not a high-end resort or boutique spa in the typical sense, but a place of spiritual
retreat appealing to a particular type of person. Located on 50 acres bordered by beauti-
ful oceanfront cliffs, it successfully separates you from the world, immersing you to the
extent that you desire in a high-end, off-the-grid organic farm where peace reigns su-
preme.
Powered by the wind and sun, and with vast resources of fruit, vegetables and live-
stock, the hotel is entirely self-sufficient. There's no sacrifice of comfort, but the experi-
ence is not opulent or indulgent either. Though a bit on the concrete side of things, the
purpose-built cliffside villa, which surrounds a central courtyard, offers nine spacious
rooms, each worthy of a well-heeled inn. There are also seven less expensive yurts for
$195, but these get extremely hot during the day. A separate spa center, with a wide-ran-
ging therapeutic menu and lovely horizon pool with fine forest views, complements the
park-like grounds.
