) The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel's 'sister' resort, open since 1994, boasts an ideal
location on Hapuna Beach and affordable rates. The rooms are clean, spacious and come
with large bathrooms, although decor is a little dated and sometimes worn. This hotel
caters to Japanese tourists and even has a bilingual concierge desk. It shares amenities
with the Mauna Kea, and buses transport guests between the two.

$325-760; ) The grand dame of the Gold Coast is understated and quietly con-
fident of its reputation. At first glance it might not wow you, but there is history here;
guests are often returnees (some for decades) and staff includes many longtimers. Moun-
tain and Golf view rooms are tastefully understated, while the beach front and beach club
rooms blend austere yet elegant touches in the form of hardwoods and swatches of color
(not to mention shady lanai). The hotel's crowning jewel, however, is simply its location
on KaunaŹ»oa Bay, arguably the best beach on the island

ing fire dance, group hula) and a gorgeous beach setting. Buffet is generous and above
