In-Depth Information
Best of all, the beach is never crowded. It is open to the public, but the hotel sets aside
only 40 parking spaces daily for nonguests. Arrive by 9am and obtain a parking pass at
the entry booth.
Mauʻumae Beach BEACH
MAP
White sand, teal water, shady trees and protected waters - and it's even more private and
local than Kaunaʻoa Bay. What's not to love about Mauʻumae? Locals are proprietary
about this gem (for good reason). There's great snorkeling on either end of the bay. Only
10 parking spots are given out here, so arrive by 9am on weekdays, and possibly earlier
on weekends.
To get here, go toward the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, turn right on Kamahoi and cross
two wooden bridges. Look for telephone pole No 22 on the left and park (you'll probably
see a bunch of cars parked). Walk down the trail to the Ala Kahakai sign and turn left to-
ward the beach. You can also get here from nearby Spencer Beach by walking 10
minutes on the Ala Kahakai Trail.
Activities
Ala Kahakai Trail HIKING
Here's another way to access Kaunaʻoa Bay: on foot. A 6-mile stretch of the 175-mile
Ala Kahakai historical trail passes many of South Kohala's signature beaches. You'll also
cover pristine shoreline and natural anchialine ponds impossible to see from the highway.
You can start at any point along the way; from the north, start at the southern end of
Spencer Beach Park, where you'll pass thick kiawe groves until you reach Mauʻumae
Beach and eventually the Mauna Kea Resort Area, including the renowned golf course.
After you navigate the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and then the beach, the trail continues
down to Beach 69. The whole hike, especially the last leg, is scorching. Of course, you
can turn back at any point. Wear strong sun protection, bring water and expect to sweat.
