This collection of
petroglyphs carved in lava rock is so easy-access that it merits a stop, although the Puako
Petroglyph Preserve further north is larger and more spectacular and isn't adjacent to a
shopping plaza pumping Taylor Swift. Many of the petroglyphs date back to the 16th
century; some are graphic (humans, birds, canoes) and others cryptic (dots, lines).
Western influences appear in the form of horses and English initials.
Park at the Kings' Shops mall and walk for five minutes on the signposted path. Never
touch or walk on the petroglyphs. Kings' Shops offers a free one-hour

Sports, established in 1981, monopolizes the ocean-activity market in South Kohala. For-
tunately the company is well run, if slightly steep in its pricing. Cruises include whale
watching ($119) and snorkeling tours ($147) aboard a 49-passenger catamaran. Kids
between six and 12 years of age pay half price. Cruises depart from either ʻAnae-
hoʻomalu Bay or Kawaihae Harbor.

The Waikoloa Beach Marriott boasts two of Hawaii's top golf
courses: the coastal Beach course is known for its par-five 12th hole; the Kings' course is
a little more challenging and offers Scottish-style links. Tee off later and pay less
(11:30am/1pm/2pm $115/105/85). Carts are mandatory.
