ʻdolphin encounters' are good or bad. Judging by the popularity of this program,
however, many willingly pay big bucks to meet this adored sea creature face to face;
$210 buys you but 30 minutes of dolphin time.

your kids. Besides the two ridiculously enormous serpentine pools (with multiple waters-
lides, waterfalls, hot tubs and sandy toddler areas), there's also an artificial beach on a
protected lagoon (frequented by sea turtles and tropical fish) and a minigolf course. Park-
ing per day self/valet is $15/21.
ANCIENT HAWAIIAN ART
Ancient Hawaiians carvedkiʻi pohaku(stone images), called petroglyphs, into
pahoehoe(smooth lava). These mysterious carvings are most common on the Big
Island, perhaps because - as the youngest island - it has the most extensive fields
ofpahoehoe. The simple images include human figures, animals and important ob-
jects such as canoes and sails. No one can prove why the Hawaiians madekiʻi po-
hakuor placed them where they did. Many petroglyph fields are found along major
trails or on the boundaries ofahupuaʻa(land divisions).
In addition to the Waikoloa petroglyphs, a large field remains further north along
the South Kohala coast in Puako; they're also found at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National
Park.
Touching the petroglyphs will damage them, so never step on or make rubbings
of them. Photography is fine and best done in the early morning or late afternoon,
when the sun is low.
