get what you pay for: dirty communal bathrooms (for all rooms) and some territorial
long-term residents sharing them with you.
Hale Maluhia Country Inn B&B $$$
( 329-1123; www.hawaii-bnb.com ; r $87-123, cottage $157-177; ) Take an exuberant
grab-bag run by a friendly couple and stuff it with elements of Japanese, Hawaiian and
bohemian style and sensibility. Put it all on a jungle mountain abutting some pretty cof-
fee plantations and boom, there's Hale Maluhia, a lovely little inn that's worth getting
lost in. We're not big fans of the smallest, cheapest rooms, so go up a little in price or opt
for one of the excellent private cottages.
The cottages feel like Shinto-Tropical retreat rooms designed by a Zen monk who was
into the Swiss Family Robinson story.
Lilikoi Inn B&B $$$
( 333-5539; www.lilikoiinn.com ; 75-5339 Mamalahoa Hwy; r incl breakfast $125-165; ) The
four rooms here all have an airy, modern art-gallery-in-the-tropics kind of vibe, blending
cool monochromes with tasteful Hawaiian decor. Each comes with private entrance, and
access to hot tub, plus guest laundry, kitchen and lanai. Breakfasts are restaurant-worthy.

) The Holualoa Inn has got oodles of class, romance and aloha. From the gleam-
ing eucalyptus floors to the unwoven lauhala (hala leaf) walls and river-rock showers,
serene beauty and comfort shines in every detail. Several gorgeous public rooms graced
with tasteful Asian art and exquisite carved furniture segue seamlessly into the outdoor
gardens and pool, while the rooftop gazebo surveys the world.
The six rooms don't disappoint, making this a peaceful, intimate retreat that you'll
long remember. No TVs, phones or children under 13. There's a kitchenette for guest
use. Rates listed include breakfast.
