In-Depth Information
Does an airport lei greeting to surprise your ipo (sweetheart) sound like fun? Several
companies offer this service, including Greeters of Hawaii, which has been in the busi-
ness of giving aloha since 1957.
Shopping for Lei
A typical Hawaiian lei costs anywhere from $10 for a single strand of orchids or
plumeria to thousands of dollars for a 100% genuine Niʻihau shell lei necklace. Beware
that some kukui (candelnut) and puka shell lei are just cheap (even plastic) imports.
When shopping for a lei, ask the florist or shopkeeper for advice about what the most
appropriate lei for the occasion is (eg for a bride, pick a string of pearl-like pikake jas-
mine flowers), and indicate if you're giving the lei to a man or a woman.
