Lei on display in an O'ahu shop
Lei: Dos & Don'ts
» Do not wear a lei hanging directly down around your neck. Instead, drape a closed (cir-
cular) lei over your shoulders, making sure equal lengths are hanging over front and back.
» When presenting a lei, bow your head slightly and raise the lei above your heart. Do not
drape it with your own hands over the head of the recipient, as this isn't respectful; let
them do it themselves.
» Don't give a closed lei to a pregnant woman, as it may bring bad luck; choose an open
(untied) lei or haku (head) lei instead.
» Resist the temptation to wear a lei intended for someone else. That's bad luck.
» Never refuse a lei, and do not take one off in the presence of the giver.
» When you stop wearing your lei, don't throw it away. Untie the string, remove the bow
and return the lei's natural elements to the earth (eg scatter flowers in the ocean, bury
seeds or nuts).
