Though not the largest or most sacred river in the state (the Wailua River holds that hon-
or) the
Hanalei River's
6 miles are scenic, calm, safe and ideal for novice kayakers and
stand up paddlers (SUP). This is how most folks experience Hanalei's interior.
Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church & Mission Hall
CHURCH
A popular site for quaint church weddings, Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church was built in 1912 by
Hanalei's first missionaries, Reverend and Mrs William Alexander, who arrived in a
double-hulled canoe. Their church, hall and mission house remain in the middle of town,
set on a huge manicured lawn with a beautiful mountain backdrop.

A dive shop
without a, well, shop. Still, we dove with them at Tunnels - where swim throughs and
snoozing sharks are the rule - and their gear and dive-masters were top notch. For an un-
forgettable experience, try night diving (summer only). An open-water certification
course is $450.

Fathom Five is based in Koloa
but during the summer they do dive at Tunnels in Haʻena. Theirs is a PADI-certified shop
and will meet you at Tunnels with all the gear you'll need. You must book at least 48
hours ahead.

Famous for pioneering sea kayaking in Kauaʻi and the first to offer the
famed Na Pali kayak trek and the Wailua River waterfall tour, they offer a variety of hik-
ing and paddling tours, as well as kayak, SUP and snorkeling rental. There's a conveni-
ent river-launch sight on the property.
