With its lifeguards and sweeping views, this is a great place for a picnic, sunset or lazy
day at the beach. Ideally located, its downside is the parking, which can be a challenge.
Park along Weke Rd if you have to, as the lot can get crowded.
Black Pot Beach Park (Hanalei Pier)
BEACH
This is one of the most popular beaches within the already popular Hanalei Bay thanks to
sweeping mountain views from a bed of powdery sand. Keep an eye out for
Namo-
lokama
looming over the bay, when
Waiʻoli Falls
has been rejuvenated by a previous
night's rain. The drawback: it's set at the river mouth, and the water does get gritty here.
The break here near the river mouth is dubbed
Grandpas
by surfers, thanks to its un-
usually mellow wave, ideal for beginners.
Waiʻoli (Pine Trees) Beach Park
BEACH
A less popular but equally beautiful spot, this beach is dominated by locals. The
shorebreak is harder here than any other spot on Hanalei Bay and swimming can be dan-
gerous, except during the calmest summer surf. The park has restrooms and showers.
Waikokos
BEACH
Catch rights and lefts at Waikokos break, protected by a reef on the western bend of
Hanalei Bay. To get there, park on the side of the main highway and find the short path
between mile markers 4 and 5.
Middles
SURFING
The surf break known as Middles is set between two more prominent breaks: Waikokos
and Pine Trees, but outside (as in ʻoutside the reef') and to the left.
The Bowl & The Point
SURFING
The two most famous surf spots on Hanalei Bay, cum Kauaʻi, cum planet earth. The
trade winds circle around Princeville and almost always blow offshore here, so it's a
prime set up and you can surf whether the swell is small or large. And it does get large
here.
The Bowl
is the inside break, and it's generally for beginners and intermediates.
The
Point
is for advanced surfers only and can get up to 20ft to 30ft. When it's that big, bring
binoculars and watch fearless surfers shred from the pier.
