In-Depth Information
to turn on Query tracking follow these steps:
1. Load the cube and perform the default aggregation.
2. right-click on the database > Select Query tracking > Select Enable.
Query tracking is now turned on. one thing to keep in mind is that when Query
tracking is turned on, Essbase will evaluate queries that include attribute dimension
data and possibly will include attribute dimensions in the recommended aggregate
view selections. This point is mentioned because the thought process regarding
attribute dimensions has always been that they are “free” and have no resource cost
when used. While this may be mostly true in BSo cubes, it is not true in ASo cubes.
Pressman has an excellent conversation regarding this in Chapter 7 on understanding
ASo cubes.
While Query tracking is turned on, there are some Essbase activities that will need to
be avoided. The query tracking information will be lost if:
•  Data is loaded or cleared.
•  An aggregation is materialized (the aggregation is actually created, not just
defined).
•  The option is taken to clear aggregations.
•  Query tracking is turned off.
Leave Query tracking enabled until after the Aggregation Design Wizard is run.
Because this process can materialize an aggregation (if you select that option), the
Wizard will turn the Query tracking off.
Note: Don't prematurely run this just to see what has been gathered “so far” and then
cancel out of the process. This will cause the tracking information gathered up to this
point to be lost. you must complete the process once you start and materialize the views.
If you do that, you can enable Query tracking again and continue the process because
you will have captured what was gathered up to the point in time when you got curious.
The Aggregation Design Wizard is accessed through EAS. to run the Aggregation
Design Wizard:
1. right-click on the database level > Select Design Aggregation.
2. In the Select Aggregation task window, select the radio option to “Design,
materialize, and Save Aggregation” > Click next.
3. In the Consider Existing Aggregate views window, select the radio option to
“Add to existing aggregate view selection” > Click next.
4. In the Specify Stop Criteria for Selection Process window, select the radio option
to “Select all recommended aggregate views” > Click next.
5. In the Select Aggregate views window, click on the checkbox at the bottom of
the window to “use query tracking data during view selection,” then click the
Start button.
6. When completed, the window will show the suggested views with an option to
deselect any unwanted views if the query cost or database size is determined
to be unsuitable (retaining all suggested views is typical but not optimal—see
Chapter 7 on how to read the recommendation screen to best choose specific
aggregations) > Click next.
