forest fires on the nearby continents. The hunger is so great that it stifles photo-
synthesis and growth.
(To 'marine organic carbon burial'): You become the murky sediments at the bot-
tom of the ocean, exquisitely sensitive to the soft touch on your muddy surface
of dead beings sinking down from the upper sunlit regions of the sea. Far fewer
carbon-rich dead bodies have come to you in recent times because of the great
fires that have raged way above in the realms of forest, air and light.
(To 'oxygen in the air'): The decreased organic carbon burial at sea means that
there is now less oxygen in the air, preventing the proliferation of wildfires that
could have wiped out much of the life on land.
Now travel around the second journey once again to feel how it works to replenish
oxygen. Becoming Gaia, you feel how with less oxygen in your air land plants
once again grow thickly on your continents, weathering huge amounts of phos-
phorous from your rocks. Your sinuous, richly braided rivers offer much of the
life-giving phosphorus to the ocean algae, helping them to grow abundantly.
Multitudes of their dead bodies sink into your sediments, far from the ardent at-
tentions of oxygen, which now remains free and abundant in the luminous air.
