Toys
Some in the 3D industry, like 3D Systems, believe that toys will be a big thing in 3D print-
ing. 3D Systems has signed agreements with companies like Hasbro (My Little Pony, Trans-
formers) and others in order to prepare for future consumer 3D printing of toys.
So far personalized toys like UK company Makielab with their Makies dolls has had limited
success. Makielab is an online doll store where kids or grownups design their own person-
al doll and Makielab 3D prints it. It is also possible to print out toys from companies like
Shapeways and Makerbot's Thingiverse.
With the arrival of 3D printing, Lego is said to face its biggest challenge so far, since anyone
will be able to print out Lego bricks themselves. However Lego claims that it is not possible
to print out Lego bricks at the same high quality level by using current low cost 3D printers
for home use. That edge will probably not last for long. Lego bricks are made in ABS, the
same material that is compatible with practically all low-cost 3D printers. One thing is for
sure: consumer market 3D printers will improve, and it might just be a matter of time before
they catch up with Lego.
