3D printing is being widely used in sports products for making prototypes. As mentioned
in “Shoes” Nike and Brooks are using 3D printing both for prototyping and end products.
New Balance has also used 3D printed spikes for elite runners. Puma, Reebok and Adidas
are using 3D printing for prototyping.
Burton Snowboards worked with UK Loughbourough University on snowboard bindings
which were used as prototypes and for testing in the field. 3D printing is popular with manu-
facturers of high performance bikes. Empire Cycles in the UK worked with Renishaw to 3D
print a bike in titanium. Another UK company, Charge Bikes, also used 3D printed titani-
um parts to make a prototype. Trek bicycles are using 3D printing for prototyping of vari-
ous parts while Giant Bicycles has used it for saddles, and Kappius Components for bicycle
hubs.
Speedo is using a multi-material printer from Stratasys for making prototypes of swimming
googles. Customization is also common in sports applications. 3D printing was used in mak-
ing customized handles for Japan's Olympic fencing team. Made Boards in the US 3D prints
the interior of customized surf boards.
