In-Depth Information
DID YOU KNOW? According to refuge publications,
the name Sunkhaze is derived from the Abnaki phrase
Wetchi-sam-kassekug. Roughly translated, this
means “concealing outlet,” referring to the stream's
well disguised junction with the mighty Penobscot
River.
Habitats include forests, alder and willow riparian zones, swamps and
the second largest peat bog in Maine. Twelve miles of other streams make
for great canoeing.
WATCHABLE WILDLIFE: While canoeing, watch
for moose, beavers, and migrating wildfowl. Other
wildlife include bears, coyotes, and white-tailed deers.
More than 200 species of birds have been seen at
Sunkhaze.
Hiking is allowed on old logging roads and there is good cross-country
skiing in winter. No facilities. Hunting is permitted in season (take nec-
essary precautions while using the refuge during these times). Put ca-
noes in at Stud Mill Road or Route 2. Office open weekdays at 1033 South
Main Street, Old Town 04468.
