area, it's a treat. Operated by the Stanton Bird Club, this forested pre-
serve features nearly three miles of color-coded paths that wind through
woods, past ponds, and by an old building foundation. Biking, camping,
alcohol, and motor vehicles are all banned. Open to skiing and snowshoe-
ing in winter. Fires by permit only. Occasional lectures, field trips. Maps
available at the parking area off Montello Street. Open daily. No fee.

Preserves/Natural Areas
Fields Pond Nature Center , Holden. This 200-acre Maine
Audubon preserve and wildlife refuge on the site of a former es-
tate features a 20-acre island in the pond. Trails include a walk
along the eastern shore of the pond and the Ravine Trail, an easy mile-
long excursion through stately white pines along a natural gorge. There
are also trails through a marsh and through fields. Plenty of parking at
the visitor center and gift shop on Fields Pond Road off the Wiswell Road.

Mendall Marsh , Frankfort. Numerous birds and other creatures live in
this 250-acre refuge on the South Branch of the Marsh River where it
meets the Penobscot. Parking area off Route 1A and boat launch.
Hunting and fishing allowed.
