Shawnee Peak Mountain Biking Park , Bridgton. Once the snow
leaves this popular ski area the chairlifts are set up to take experienced
mountain bikers and their mounts up 1,300 vertical feet to the summit. A
wide variety of trails go down. Views from 1,900-foot summit range all
the way to White Mountains. Terrain varies from technical descent areas
to open fields to wooded lands. Open weekends only June-September.

nor repairs available.

Sugarloaf USA , Carrabassett Valley. This 7,000-acre resort sports more
than 50 miles of trails open to mountain biking. Riding varies from dirt
roads to ski trails to single track and there are routes for every skill level.
Shuttle service to various riding locations. $5 per day trail fee. Open June
through August. Numerous lodging and restaurant options on mountain
and nearby. Vertical drops of 1-2,000 feet possible. Several bike shops and
service centers on mountain. Bike and equipment rentals available.

Hebron to Canton Railbed , Hebron. This 18-mile abandoned railroad
line offers easy riding on gradual grades through pretty woods and along
marshy areas and ponds where frequent wildlife sightings can be made.
Passes through village of Buckfield. Used by snowmobiles in winter.
ATVs are allowed. Permission must be obtained to ride on one gated sec-
tion (keeps in livestock) in East Sumner. You can detour around on Route
140 to Hartford. Some wet sections. Ends at Lake Anasagunticook.
Jay to Farmington Railbed . This 15-mile route follows an abandoned
railroad bed from the paper mill town of Jay, north through Wilton to
West Farmington. It features easy grades and good gravel surface. It is
used by snowmobiles in winter. Route passes through woods, fields and
wetlands. Some old railway buildings and rusting relics remain. Several
attractive picnic spots. Route also passes Troll Valley Cross Country Ski
and Mountain Biking center in Farmington. It features 14 miles of sin-
