Mount Blue State Park , Weld. There are more than 20 miles of single-
and double-track trails through forested mountains with the occasional
great view. Designed with riders in mind, some trails have picnic stops
and shelters. Grades are moderate and elevation gains modest. ATVs and
horses allowed on some trails; Hikers allowed on all trails. Dirt roads of-
fer expanded riding opportunities. Campground in the park.

of the very best foliage destinations in the country.
Maples & Mountains
160 miles, 4 hours, round trip
Highlights: This region features fertile, rolling hills, majestic mountain
ranges, sparkling lakes and fish-filled streams. Takes you to Fryeburg, the
site of Maine's oldest agricultural fair. This area's historic towns are a liv-
ing tribute to the simpler lifestyle of a previous era.
Route: From Fryeburg , drive southeast on US 302, stopping to see the
Hemlock Covered Bridge in East Fryeburg. Continue on 302 to Na-
ples , where you can cruise the lake on the Songo River Queen (operates
weekends in September). Take 35 north to Harrison , then 117 north.
Take a side trip to West Paris for information on tourmaline, the state
gem, at Perham's. West of Norway, drive north on Greenwood Road along
Lake Pennesseewassee to Greenwood , then east on 219 to 26 into the
beautiful village of Bethel . In Bethel, enjoy a leisurely game of golf. Take
US 2/Route 26 north to Newry , crossing the covered bridge known as the
Artist's Bridge (see page 326). Newry is also home to Sunday River ,a
ski resort with chairlift rides offering brilliant mountain views of fall fo-
liage. Go north on 26 to Grafton Notch State Park , taking time for
short, color-filled hikes to Screw Auger Falls, Moose Cave, Mother
Walker Falls, and the Natural Falls.
Take 26 south back through Newry, then on US 2/26 south back to Bethel.
Take US 2 west to Gilead, then go south on 113 to Evans Notch , with its
panoramic views of the White Mountains to Stow. Go east around Kezar
Lake, nestled at the foot of the Presidential Range in the White Moun-
