Wild Gardens of Acadia , Suier de Monts Springs in Acadia National
Park. This tiny three-quarter-acre plot of land is a thriving garden con-
taining more than 500 plant species native to Mount Desert Island.
Two features make the garden unique - the range of plant species, in-
cluding those customarily found in the more northern and southern re-
gions, and the division of the garden into habitats.
As glaciers retreated more than 4,000 years ago, many plants were left
behind - mountain cranberry, bunchberry, bearberry, rhodora, choke-
berry, mountain sandwort, Labrador tea, early saxifrage, crowberry and
three-toothed cinquefoil. Today, hikers find these plants on mountain
summits. In the Wild Gardens they are found in the artificially con-
structed mountain and heath habitats and clearly labelled to aid in
indentification.
There is plenty of parking and no fee. Donations are accepted in a box at
the entrance of the garden. Nature center and trailside Native American
Museum within walking distance.
