GOLFING: Greens fees vary greatly according to the popularity of the
course and the time of year. For instance, fees at Kebo Valley Golf Club in
Bar Harbor, the country's ninth oldest course, are $30 for 18 holes in May,
but jump to $60 July through mid-September. Meanwhile, you can play
all day at the nine-hole Castine Golf Club course for just $20. In
Rockland, greens fees for the municipal course are $30 for 18 holes; at the
nearby Samoset course, which fronts open ocean, peak-season fees top
out around $100 for 18 holes (resort guests do qualify for a discount). On
average, expect to be charged $15-20 for 18 holes.
Maine's Top Ten Adventures
If, to use native parlance, you'd like to tell your friends that when it
comes to experiencing the outdoors in Maine you've “been theyah, done
that,” here is a list of what we consider to be be the top 10 destina-
tions/activities.
Acadia National Park
New England's only national park protects 40,000 acres of spectacular
rocky shoreline and numerous mountain peaks. More than 120 miles of
hiking trails, 50 miles of car-free, groomed, biking paths, cobble beaches
and fresh and saltwater swimming. Many summits are bare and sport
spring wildflowers.
Baxter State Park/Katahdin
From the top of Katahdin, Maine's highest windswept peak at just shy of
a mile, to rocky ponds brimming with moose, this 205,000-acre preserve
offers the outdoors the way it should be - by reservation with the gates
shut when the parking lots fill. You have to go hundreds of miles north
into Canada to find comparable wilderness.
The Allagash
A designated National Wild and Scenic River, the Allagash provides a
rare opportunity on the East coast for extended canoe trips of a week or
more. From grand Chamberlain Lake with its wind-whipped waters, to
the challenging Class II whitewater of Chase Rapids, to campsites where
loons serenade you to sleep, this is a first-class canoeing experience.
