The Price of Adventuring
WHALE-WATCHING: A typical two- to four-hour whale-watching trip
costs $25-$35 per person. Many operators offer money-back guarantees if
no whales are seen.
WHITEWATER RAFTING: Nearly all trips take less than a day with
an average cost of $80-90 per adult. Most include a riverside lunch.
Lifejackets are provided but wetsuit rentals cost extra.
BIKE RENTALS: Rates range from $9 to $25 per day, depending on
model.
DEEP-SEA FISHING: When the weather is rough a half-day of deep-sea
fishing is plenty. That will set you back $25-35. A full day runs from $40
to $55. Most trips include rod, reels and bait. Beer, other beverages and
snacks will cost extra. Deckhands will usually fillet your catch should
you choose to keep it (be sure to tip for this service).
SIGHTSEEING, BY AIR, LAND & SEA: Depending on duration sight-
seeing and sunset cruises range anywhere from $15 to $25 for adults; less
for children. Sightseeing bus or trolley tours cost in the vicinity of $15 per
adult, $5-7 per child. Float plane, glider, hot air balloon and single-engine
plane sightseeing trips cost from $20 to $45 per person, depending on the
amount of time spent in the air. Per-person fees may be lowered if a group
participates.
WINDJAMMER TOURS: A windjammer trip can run anywhere from
$350 to $750 per person, per week, less for shorter trips with fewer ame-
nities. Fees include cabin and meals.
GUIDED CANOE/KAYAK TRIPS: Overnight trips average $100-150
per person, per day. Half-day guided trips run in the vicinity of $50.
CANOE/KAYAK RENTALS: Basic rentals for either cost between $25
and $45 per day. Most rentals include life jackets, paddles and car-
topping gear.
HUNTING & FISHING GUIDES: Registered Maine Guides charge
between $100 and $200 per day for their services, depending on how far
