Digital Cameras and File Format
The Camera Raw image file format is specific to your digital camera, with
most being propriety formats of your specific camera. Because of this,
there are hundreds of image raw file formats. The Camera Raw feature of
Photoshop Elements 13 can understand many of these raw file formats.
When it opens an image in raw file format, Camera Raw identifies the
data that it can manipulate with its Camera Raw features. Your camera
might not be compatible with the Camera Raw feature, but most are. To
check this compatibility visit Adobe's website at http://helpx.adobe.com/

Opening Camera Raw Images
After you download your Camera Raw images from your camera, you can open them in the
Photo Editor using the Open in Camera Raw menu command. These files have a different
file extension, such as CRW or CR2, indicating that they are Camera Raw images. The raw
data of the file can then be manipulated using the Camera Raw controls of the Photo Editor
to enhance the image. When the image is enhanced, it can then be saved in a Photoshop
Elements supported format and either imported into your catalog or opened normally in the
Photo Editor. This process leaves the original Camera Raw image untouched and creates a
new file that has been processed and compressed and therefore can be opened in the Pho-
toshop Elements.
