Saving a Camera Raw image file
Camera Raw files are being used more and more in digital photography due to the massive
amounts of data that this file format can contain. The Camera Raw feature of Photoshop
Elements lets you take advantage of all this data by making enhancements and edits to the
data prior to processing and compressing the file. This chapter covers using the Camera
Raw feature of Adobe Photoshop Elements 13.
What Are Camera Raw Images?
When you take a picture with your digital camera, you might have an option to store your
picture in raw format on the camera. This type of image is minimally processed and com-
pressed by the camera—it's Camera Raw data. A Camera Raw image can be compared to
a photo negative used in film photography in that the image is not usable as a photo in this
state, but it contains all the information you need to create the photo. You cannot open a
raw image file through the typical Open command in the Photo Editor. It has to be opened
in the Camera Raw feature of Photoshop Elements 13, and then you can perform edits and
modifications to adjust contrast, color, sharpness, and white balance. This file type has a
wider range in its color gamut and because it is not processed yet, it preserves most of the
photo information. You can manipulate the raw data to adjust and enhance the photo, get-
ting the best possible quality before taking it into Photoshop Elements. Then in Photo Ed-
itor you can use all the tools, filters, and enhancements that we cover in this topic.
