Play Games
With an iOS device and an Apple TV, games consoles can be a thing of the past, thanks to the
wide range of games that use the mirroring feature. Some games simply show on your TV the iOS
device's screen as is — so you play the game on your device and others can watch on the TV. Other
games use the iOS device's screen as a secondary display. For example, Real Racing shows the main
action on the TV screen, while your iOS device shows you just information such as the maps for the
track you are racing on. Either way, you use the iOS device itself to play the game, such as maneuver-
ing on the touchscreen and taking advantage of its accelerometer to tilt the device to steer a virtual
car.
How games use Apple TV connectivity differs from app to app, but generally speaking you need
to look for the AirPlay button ( ) in the app to switch the display to the Apple TV. If the app has
no AirPlay button, use the AirPlay controls in the multitasking dock in iOS to mirror the screen. For
most games, expect to use the screen-mirroring capability in your iOS device, not a separate AirPlay
control in the game itself.
Mirror games to an Apple TV
Most games that harness the Apple TV mirroring feature use the following technique to connect
to a TV; however, you may need to adjust some settings specific to the app to work properly.
1. Launch the game you want to mirror to your Apple TV on your iOS device.
2. Double-press the Home button on your device.
3. Swipe from left to right across the row of icons that appears until you see the AirPlay button
(
).
4. Tap the AirPlay button ( ) and choose your Apple TV from the menu that appears.
5. Set the Mirroring switch to On (see Figure 4-1). Your device's screen should appear on the
TV.
6. Return to your app, so its screen appears on the TV. Some games will show the same thing
on both screens, and some game will show controls on the iOS screen (as if it were a gaming
console) and the main action on the TV screen.
