NOTE: In Step 13, if you press a button you've already assigned to a different function, the Apple
TV displays the Button Already Learned screen as a warning. Select Try Again to go back and assign
another button. When on the screen for assigning buttons, you can press the left button to go back to
an earlier button in the sequence and reassigning buttons.
Make the Apple TV Play More than Apple Wants
If you want to get even more out of your Apple TV than is possible with the apps you've seen so
far in this topic, you can jail-break your Apple TV and install unapproved third-party software. For
example, you can install the popular aTV Flash software to add capabilities ranging from playing
DVDs and other media formats the Apple TV doesn't natively support to surfing the web and keeping
up with blogs.
Out of the box, the Apple TV's software contains protective features that keep it within the eco-
system that Apple designed and limit it to running software approved by Apple. This ecosystem is
called a walled garden — a safe area protected from the wilds of the Internet. Jail-breaking involves
installing a customized version of iOS that removes the protective features, allowing the Apple TV to
go outside the walled garden.
This topic doesn't show you how to jail-break your Apple TV, but you can easily find instructions
on the Internet. The technology changes rapidly, so before attempting a jail-break, double-check that
the instructions apply to the Apple TV model and version of iOS that you are using. And note that
there's a risk you may damage your Apple TV beyond repair.
