If you jail-break your Apple TV, you may well want to install the $30 aTV Flash a suite from
FireCore ( http://firecore.com ) or try out any of the free alternatives. It allows you to supercharge
your Apple TV in several ways, including:
• Installing extra software. You can customize your Apple TV by choosing which apps and
packages to install (see Figure 10-10).
• Playing other media formats, including DVDs . aTV Flash includes XBMC Media
Center, as shown in Figure 10-11, which offers information and entertainment ranging from
weather forecasts and Internet radio to music and video playback from your network-at-
tached storage (NAS) device. XBMC can even play DVD files that you've copied from physic-
al discs.
• Surfing the web. The Browser app enables you to browse the Web without leaving your
Apple TV. Typing URLs on the onscreen keyboard is cumbersome, but you can easily follow
links and bookmark pages to return to later. Or simply use a Bluetooth keyboard instead.
• Keeping up with blogs and websites. You can read RSS feeds directly on your Apple
TV, which is great for staying up to date with your favorite sources of information.
• Last.fm. This service provides Internet radio that you can customize with your personal
stations.
