#19 Losinj Island
© Wikimedia / Daniel Niederl
Situated off mainland Croatia in the northern Adriatic, tiny Losinj Island is connected to the
larger Cres Island by a small bridge and accessible by ferry from Pula and Zadar. Due to
its remoteness from the main tourist hotspots Losinj is considered one of Croatia's best kept
secrets and mainly visited by German, Italian and Slovenian tourists. Inhabited since prehis-
toric times, Losinj Island has a rich maritime history and offers peaceful fishing villages and
secluded beaches. There may not be the historic attractions of Split or Dubrovnik but if it's
peace, quiet and low prices you're after, then Losinj delivers on all counts. Be prepared for
a bit of a journey to get there (a 100 km drive from Zagreb, a car ferry and then another hour
long drive) but it's worth it.
