In-Depth Information
The Gulf Coast has seen its share of disasters over the past ten years. Nature
has made her presence felt with several major hurricanes making landfall in or
near the area, including Ivan, Dennis, and Katrina. And, of course, there was the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill that nearly took out the beaches. With all of this, the
fragile coastal wildlife habitats were obviously threatened, but the Gulf is resili-
ent, and so are its people. The habitats are returning to normal, and the beaches
are their beautiful white once again.
Fall and winter along the Gulf Coast are wonderful, to say the least. Most of the
time, moderate temperatures, averaging in the low to mid-70s, last well into fall.
During this time the humidity is quite low, making hiking a real pleasure. Temper-
atures in January average around 52°F. Now don't get me wrong, it does get cold
in the Deep South. Temperatures have dropped to single digits on several occa-
sions, but those days are few and usually short-lived.
