In-Depth Information
The intersection of the Gator Lake and Pine Beach Trails on Alabama's Gulf Coast
History abounds in this region as well. The Battle of Mobile Bay was fought
here during the Civil War. It was in this battle that Union admiral David Farragut
reportedly uttered the immortal words, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”
The battle occurred at Fort Morgan just west of the Bon Secour National Wildlife
Refuge. Just north along the Mobile River in Spanish Fort is Historic Blakeley
State Park, the site of the Battle of Blakeley, which is recognized as the last major
battle of the Civil War.
The weather in the region is subtropical. Late summer heat is accentuated by
high humidity that often hits 100 percent, making outdoor activity a bit uncom-
fortable and sometimes dangerous. The warm air and Mobile's location on the
Gulf of Mexico mean that sudden and very heavy rainfall can be expected without
warning. The storms are short, but the rain is plentiful. In fact, Mobile has held the
National Weather Service title of “wettest city in America” a number of times.
