Modernism
In the arts, Modernism is used to describe a radical break with the past and the search for new
forms of expression. It was inspired by industrialization and is often characterized by its sim-
plicity and functionality, with a distinct lack of decoration for its own sake.
Persona
In marketing a persona represents a group of customers on which a company can focus its ef-
forts. By understanding a customer's character, a company can predict and design for specific
habits.

Prototype
An original, full-scale, and usually working model of a new product or an updated version of
an existing product.
Readability
This refers to how easy it is to read
and understand large passages of text. It can often be confused with legibility , which refers to
the recognition of individual characters, not whole words or paragraphs.
Rebus
A device that uses pictures to represent words or parts of words.
RSS Reader (Rich Site Summary)
A browser add-on program, sometimes called a feed reader. It is designed to gather and display
news feeds from specific sites. The reader reduces the time and effort needed to check for up-
dates manually.
Sandblasting
The act of propelling abrasive material under high pressure against a specific surface to either
roughen or smooth it, or to remove surface contamination.
Semiotics
The study of signs and symbols.
Signage
The collective term for signs used to display information, such as giving directions or advert-
ising.
