There is a wonderful exhibit of masks
and totem poles, arranged by cultural
group, with their distinctive elements
identifi ed. For example, visitors learn
that Haida art is characterized by a
carved, raised eyelid line and a con-
cave orbit from the bridge of the nose
to the temple to the nostril. There are
also enormous feast dishes shaped
like bears and wolves; magnifi cent
Coast Salish capes, blankets and bags
woven with cedar bark; a sound-and-
light show explaining the cosmology
of Northwest Coast First Nations; more
than 100 Haida argillite carvings; and
countless other items of interest.
In the Modern History exhibit, there are
recreations of scenes from the last cen-
tury of B.C.'s history, including a 1920s
