VANCOUVER HOSTS THE 2010 OLYMPIC
WINTER GAMES
Vancouver, the metropolis of British Columbia has been chosen by
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the XXI Olympic
Winter Games in 2010. The other three fi nalist cities were Bern
(Switzerland), Pyeongchang (South Korea) and Salzburg (Austria).
The Winter Games will be held from February 12 to 28, 2010.
Within Vancouver, hockey games will be played at GM Place; curl-
ing competitions will take place in Hillcrest Park's new curling centre;
fi gure skating and speed skating events will be held at Hastings Park's
renovated Pacifi c Coliseum; and Vancouver's Olympic village will wel-
come athletes in Southeast False Creek.
Outside Vancouver, freestyle skiing and snowboarding competitions
will take place in the renovated facilities at Cypress Mountain; other
hockey games will be held at the University of British Columbia's new
winter stadium; Richmond's new ice rink will host the long track speed
skating meets; alpine skiing (downhill, slalom and combined events)
will be held at the renovated facilities at Whistler Creekside and
Whistler Blackcomb; nordic skiing competitions (biathlon, cross-coun-
try, ski jumping and nordic combined) will take place at the Whistler
Nordic Centre's new facilities (which will be built in the Callaghan
Valley); bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events will be held at the new
Whistler Sliding Centre, located on Blackcomb Mountain; and, fi nally,
Whistler's athletes' village will also be located in the Callaghan Valley.
